Two similar-looking constructor calls can preserve different values. This Python lab uses invented measurement inputs to separate decimal text, an already-created binary float and the display of a result. It is a small programming exercise rather than a financial calculation policy.

Make the input type visible

Prepare the string "0.1" and the float 0.1 as separate inputs. Import Decimal from decimal and construct a Decimal from each. Inspect repr of the inputs and the constructed values. Do not format them to a short display before checking what information each conversion received.

Compare the two constructors

Decimal("0.1") represents the decimal text directly. Decimal(0.1) converts the value of the float, which has already used binary floating-point representation. The latter can therefore show a longer decimal expansion. That expansion exposes the prior float value; it is not evidence that the Decimal constructor randomly added digits.

Keep arithmetic experiments independent

In a normal context, add Decimal("0.1") to Decimal("0.2") and compare with Decimal("0.3"). In another case, calculate 0.1 + 0.2 as floats before constructing a Decimal. Record the sequence as well as the final representation. Converting after the calculation does not replay it with decimal inputs.

Record the context and display rule

Decimal arithmetic uses a context with precision and rounding settings. Save those settings when comparing results. A string formatted for display does not, by itself, define how a later calculation should round or which original input was intended. Choose those rules explicitly for the actual application.

Keep a reproducible result sheet

  • Input value and Python type before conversion.
  • Exact constructor expression and resulting representation.
  • Arithmetic order and the context used.
  • Independently predicted result and any display formatting.

Choose the representation at the boundary

When decimal text is the intended source, preserve it until the appropriate conversion rather than silently routing it through a float. Some applications legitimately start with binary measurements; their requirements differ. The useful habit is to explain the input boundary before choosing an equality check or a rounding rule.
