Plan Stable Pagination for a Small Node.js Listing API
Pagination is a useful backend exercise because it combines input validation, data ordering and a caller-visible contract. Start with a small invented record set and describe how a client requests the next group of results. This guide is a design exercise, not a prescription for every production API.
Define a bounded request
Choose a default page size and an explicit maximum for the exercise. State whether an omitted value uses the default and whether invalid values produce an error. Do not let a negative number, decimal or very large value quietly remove the intended bound.
URL query parameters arrive as text. Parse them deliberately and check the result against your contract. A conversion that produces a number is not, by itself, proof that the value is an allowed page size.
Give the records a deterministic order
Use a field that matches the listing's purpose and add a unique tie-breaker when needed. For example, a creation time can be followed by an ID. Rows with equal primary values should still have an unambiguous relative order.
Database LIMIT and OFFSET operations do not establish that order for you. Inspect the complete ordered sample first, then compare the pages with the sequence you expected.
Choose one pagination approach for the first version
An offset-based exercise can be easy to understand with a fixed dataset: request a bounded number of rows after a stated offset. A cursor-based design can use a continuation position based on the ordering fields.
Neither approach should be described as universally best. Dataset changes, query patterns and performance requirements matter. Document the limitation of the version you actually built instead of adding a complex second design immediately.
Describe results without making the client guess
Return the records and enough information for the caller to follow your chosen contract. Be clear about an empty result and about whether a next page is available. Do not invent a total count if you did not calculate it.
Use one sample response in the README. Explain whether a page number starts at zero or one if you use page numbers, and how invalid continuation values are handled.
Test boundaries and changes
- The default request uses the documented page size.
- Zero, negative, fractional and over-limit inputs follow explicit rules.
- Equal sort values are resolved by a unique tie-breaker.
- Two pages over a fixed dataset produce the expected sequence.
- A request beyond the available records returns a clear empty result.
- Adding or deleting a record exposes the documented behaviour of the chosen approach.
Keep security and performance claims proportionate
Use safe database parameter handling and avoid building SQL by concatenating untrusted query text. A pagination limit is useful, but it does not replace access control or establish that a query is efficient.
