JavaScript Defaults: Preserve Zero, False and an Empty String Deliberately

JavaScript Defaults: Preserve Zero, False and an Empty String Deliberately — conceptual learning illustration

A default value can hide a data bug when it replaces a value that was valid. Before choosing a JavaScript operator, define what the field means and which inputs should count as missing.

Write the field rule first

Suppose a synthetic settings panel stores a quantity, a notification preference and an optional label. Zero can be a valid quantity, false can be a deliberate preference, and an empty label may or may not be allowed. Those are separate decisions. A single truthiness test cannot express every validation rule.

This exercise belongs beside modern JavaScript foundations in a full stack learning plan. Jaipur learners can use the small input matrix to explain their reasoning before building a complete interface.

Build a five-input prediction table

For each of 0, false, an empty string, null and undefined, predict the result of value || "fallback" and value ?? "fallback". The logical OR expression returns the fallback for all five inputs. Nullish coalescing returns the fallback only for null and undefined; the other three values remain unchanged.

Choose an operator from the requirement

If the quantity rule says only absent values receive a default, nullish coalescing is a suitable starting point. It still does not prove that the quantity is numeric, finite or within a permitted range. Validate those requirements explicitly. The string "0" and the number 0 are different input types.

If a blank label should trigger replacement, define what blank means, including whether whitespace-only text counts. Neither operator automatically trims text or explains a useful validation error.

Inspect the less obvious edges

  • NaN is preserved by nullish coalescing; treat numeric validity as a separate check.
  • The fallback expression is evaluated only when the left side triggers it.
  • Use explicit parentheses when combining nullish coalescing with logical AND or OR; directly mixing them is a syntax error.

Turn a bug report into a test

Write a tiny function that applies your quantity default. Check that an input of 0 still produces 0, while null produces the chosen default. Add separate tests for invalid strings if the function accepts external input. Keep the expected result next to each input so a reviewer can understand the contract without running the whole application.

Explain the business meaning without inventing it

Your practice record should state which values are permitted and why the default exists. The same technique applies to API responses and saved preferences, but real product rules must come from the actual requirement.
