Azure Tags: Check Resource Values Instead of Assuming Group Inheritance
A resource hierarchy and a set of tags answer different questions. This Azure worksheet separates the group containing a resource from the metadata stored on that resource. Use fictional names and tag values; no subscription changes are needed to reason through the example.
Make three objects explicit
Draw a worksheet with one resource group, ResourceA and ResourceB. Give the group Environment=Practice. Leave ResourceA without that tag and give ResourceB Environment=Sandbox. Record the tags on each object separately rather than writing one inherited value across the entire worksheet.
Check the default assumption
Azure resources do not automatically inherit tags from their resource group or subscription. The group tag therefore does not, by itself, fill ResourceA or overwrite ResourceB. In a real authorized review, inspect the actual resource tags instead of inferring them from the group page.
Define the policy you want
Write whether the intended rule adds a missing tag or replaces an existing conflicting value. State the resources and resource types covered. A rule that preserves a resource-specific value has a different purpose from a rule enforcing one group-wide value, so that choice belongs in the requirements.
Separate assignment from remediation
Azure Policy provides tagging definitions with different effects. A chosen assignment and its scope are explicit configuration, not a default inheritance rule. Existing resources can need a remediation process depending on the policy. Review the applicable definition and observation steps before declaring the inventory consistent.
Keep the worksheet reviewable
- List the group and each resource with its own observed tag values.
- State how missing and conflicting values should be handled.
- Check scope, resource support and authorization before a real policy change.
- Keep secrets and sensitive personal information out of tags.
Use the result to guide further study
Resource organisation and automation foundations fit the Mango Engineers Azure learning path. Preserve the worksheet as a question about intended metadata behavior. A planned rule becomes an operational result only after an authorized change and inspection of the affected resources.
